Engine Yard Enhances Its Platform as a Service with High Availability and Database Capabilities

Leading PaaS Solution Provides Development Teams with Greater Reliability and Choice

SAN FRANCISCO – November 9, 2011 – Engine Yard, the leading Platform as a Service (PaaS), today announced new features and enhancements to its platform, including high availability and database capabilities. These additions extend the Engine Yard platform to enable development teams to innovate faster and build highly reliable, scalable applications in the cloud. The release of these platform updates is a major milestone in empowering development teams to deploy and manage applications more efficiently.

“Engine Yard constantly strives to expand capabilities for our customers. With these latest enhancements, Engine Yard continues to set the standard for the PaaS industry by rapidly addressing feedback from the developer community,” said Dr. Nic Williams, vice president of technology at Engine Yard. “These latest innovations in the Engine Yard platform allow developers to improve application reliability with an even simpler and smoother deployment experience.”

The robust Engine Yard infrastructure offers dedicated virtual machine instances that are isolated from other customers running on Engine Yard Cloud. In the rare event that the Engine Yard dashboard suffers an outage, customer environments would continue to run without impact. With a new feature rolling out over the next few days, Engine Yard Cloud will automatically distribute each customer application across multiple availability zones within an Amazon Web Services (AWS) region, enhancing application resilience in the event of an underlying infrastructure fault. In the case of a natural disaster or other significant emergency, developers can further improve availability by quickly redeploying applications in any AWS region, including: US East, US West, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Japan.

Engine Yard has also introduced PostgreSQL in alpha on Engine Yard Cloud. PostgreSQL is a powerful, open source, object-relational database system. Customers using Rails 3.1 can take advantage of significant speed gains with PostgreSQL versus MySQL. Rails 3.1 adds caching for prepared statements, resulting in performance improvements of 1.5 to 10 times for many applications that use PostgreSQL.

Engine Yard customers can easily choose from a range of database options that include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Mongo, and Redis, as well as configure the deployment topology. MySQL v5.5 will also be available soon to all Engine Yard customers under the Engine Yard beta program.

In addition, core stack updates include: Ruby 1.9.3 now available in alpha on Engine Yard Cloud and Engine Yard Managed, delivering improved performance and response time Rails 3.1 support now available on Engine Yard Cloud and Engine Yard Managed Improves performance through enhancements such as the asset pipeline, HTTP streaming, and support for prepared statements Adds jQuery as the default JavaScript library

These new features and enhancements follow the recent launch of Engine Yard Platform Services, a worldwide partner program that provides application solutions and applications-as-a-service, cloud stack extensions and add-ons, development tools and services, management and operations utilities, and security.
