Engine Yard Appoints Java Veteran as Vice President of Product Management and Marketing

Mike Piech has more than 20 Years of Industry Expertise and Believes Ruby is the Right Choice

SAN FRANCISCO – January 26, 2011 – Engine Yard, the leading cloud computing Platform-as-a-Service for Ruby on Rails, today announced the appointment of Mike Piech as vice president of product management and marketing. In his new role, Piech will be responsible for product strategy, requirements, roadmap, positioning, and messaging for the Engine Yard Ruby-on-Rails cloud platform.

“Ruby is the language of the cloud, and we continue to see examples of how it accelerates modern application development for both enterprises and fast-growing web companies,” said Roger Levy, Sr. VP of Products at Engine Yard. “As enterprises take advantage of the productivity gains of building apps in Ruby and deploying to the cloud, they want to leverage their existing investments in Java. Mike’s experience in the Java world arms him to understand where enterprises are coming from and will be instrumental in helping us deliver a platform that leverages the power of Ruby.”

Previously, Piech served as Senior Director of Product Marketing at Oracle, managing Oracle Fusion Middleware products, including WebLogic, Coherence, JRockit, and Tuxedo. He launched the Exalogic Elastic Cloud integrated hardware and software offering and helped drive WebLogic Server to #1 in Java EE application server market share. Prior to joining Oracle as part of the BEA acquisition, he spent seven years running product marketing at Dorado Corporation, which builds a WebLogic-based cloud solution for mortgage banking. Before Dorado, Mike’s tenure at Sun Microsystems included engineering roles as well as product marketing for enterprise Java.

“Companies today innovate at a mind-blowing pace, and their requirements for application development and deployment are shifting focus to speed, agility, and support for Web and mobile platforms,” said Mike Piech, VP of Product Management and Marketing. “Ruby and Rails enable developers to get rich, high-quality Web apps up and running lightning-fast. When it was created, Java brought much-needed change to how software was built and run, and it’s been used to create lots of great software. The next generation of applications is increasingly cloud-based, mobile-accessed, and rapidly iterated, and for this new world, Ruby on Rails is the right choice.”
